Ace is an internal app used by project managers and staff to log time against projects and allocate resources.
To put myself in the shoes of a project manager, I conducted interviews, sat in on scheduling meetings, and surveyed other software they had used. Out of this came use cases and requirements.
The designs were created over a few iterations, using walk-throughs to see whether they would meet user needs. The biggest challenge was displaying all the information in a clear way. I paid close attention to layout and font-size for legibility, and used a combination of color, charts and sparklines to give an overview and surface trends.
